"Gangnam Style" in line for UK dictionary inclusion.

He has the most-watched video in Youtube history, become a pop sensation with a horse-riding dance craze that has swept the world and now Korean singer Psy may cement his place in popular culture with recognition from a British dictionary.

"Gangnam Style," Psy's signature song, has been chosen along with "fiscal cliff" and "Romneyshambles" as some of Collins Dictionary's words of the year.

"We were looking for words that told the story of the year," said Ian Brookes, the dictionary's consultant editor.

"Some words are from events that have been and gone and so are not likely to stick around ... but others are

probably here to stay."

Other headline entries centered on American politics.

"Fiscal cliff" has drawn a lot of attention as the deadline for Congress and President Obama to agree on government spending and tax plans draws nearer.

While the term "Romneyshambles" entered the British public's consciousness after Mitt Romney's gaffe-ridden visit to London in July in which he questioned Britain's readiness to host the Olympics.

The inclusion of "47 percent" on the list after a leaked video showed Romney telling donors that 47 percent of Americans would definitely vote for Obama because of their dependency on the government capped off a bad year for the losing presidential candidate.

Collins received over 7,000 submissions on its online database.

Twelve words of the year - one for each month - were then selected on the basis of the frequency with which they were spoken, how many places they appeared and their longevity in public discourse.

Appearing on the Collins words of the year list is no guarantee of insertion in the next dictionary.

But Gangnam Style stands a very good chance, Brookes said.

"It's obviously a craze, so there's the possibility it will go away. But it's been heard by so many people that I think

it's probably earned the right to go into the dictionary."

Other words of the year include "mummy porn" after the popularity of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" books, and "superstorm" after Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc along the east coast of America in October.

Singer Travis pleads not guilty to assault.

Country singer Randy Travis pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault in a municipal courtroom in the Dallas uburb of Plano on Friday, his lawyer said.

Lawyer Peter A. Schulte told Reuters his client is "absolutely not guilty of this crime."

Police say Travis assaulted a man in a church parking lot in Plano in August while attempting to intervene in a disagreement between a woman he was with and the woman's estranged husband.

"He was actually being a good Samaritan at the time, stepping in to save two women from being assaulted,"

Schulte said. He said the woman Travis was with and his daughter were being harassed by two men.

The charge against Travis carries a maximum $500 fine and no jail time. The case is set for trial March 11.

The altercation occurred during a bad stretch for the 53-year-old Grammy winner. Earlier in August, Travis was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after he was found lying naked near his wrecked car along a north Texas highway. He also was accused of threatening to shoot and kill the troopers investigating the case, according to a police report.

The North Carolina-born country singer, known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen," also was arrested in February for drunken driving while sitting in his car in the parking lot of another north Texas church.

Schulte said Travis has been doing well since the two August incidents. He said his client was upbeat as he left the courtroom Friday.

"He turned and wished everybody who was there a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year," he said.

Hundreds pay tribute to legendary Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar.

Ravi Shankar's daughters, Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar, along with the wife of late Beatle George Harrison said their final goodbyes to the Indian sitar virtuoso on Thursday at a public memorial service in Encinitas, California.

The legendary musician and composer, who helped introduce the sitar to the Western world through his collaboration with The Beatles, died on December 11 in Southern California. He was 92.

About 700 people joined Shankar's wife, Sukanya, and family at the service held at a spiritual center in the coastal town about 25 miles north of San Diego.

Olivia Harrison, the widow of Beatles guitarist George Harrison, told Reuters the three-time Grammy winner who formed a musical and spiritual bond with The Beatle "expressed music at its deepest level."

"As a person he was just sweet and seemed to know everything," she added. "He was a true citizen of the world."

Shankar is credited with popularizing Indian music through his work with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles beginning in the mid-1960s, inspiring George Harrison to learn the sitar and the British band to record songs like "Norwegian Wood" (1965) and "Within You, Without You" (1967).

"He completely transformed (George's) musical sensibilities," a tearful Harrison told the crowd. "They exchanged

ideas and melodies until their hearts and minds were intertwined like a double helix."
'LITTLE CRUMB'His friendship with Harrison led him to appearances at the Monterey and Woodstock pop festivals in the late 1960s and the 1972 Concert for Bangladesh. He became one of the first Indian musicians to become a household name in the West.

His influence in classical music, including on composer Philip Glass, was just as large. His work with Menuhin on their "West Meets East" albums in the 1960s and 1970s earned them a Grammy, and he wrote concertos for sitar and orchestra for both the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.

"I always felt like a little crumb in his presence," Zubin Mehta, a former music director of the New York Philharmonic and collaborator with Shankar, said at the service.

Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock also attended the service along with "Anna Karenina" director Joe Wright, the husband of Shankar's daughter Anoushka.

Shankar, who had lived in Encinitas for the past 20 years, had suffered from upper respiratory and heart issues over the past year and underwent heart-valve replacement surgery last week at a hospital in San Diego. The surgery was successful but he was unable to recover.

Shankar's final concert was on November 4 in Long Beach, California, with his Grammy-winning sitarist daughter Anoushka, who spoke giving thanks to those who came. Jones, the third Grammy-winner in the family, did not speak at the service.

Americans answer D.C.'s siren song of employment, strong economy.

Thirteen years ago the band The Magnetic Fields crooned that the U.S. capital city is "the greatest place to be," in the indie love song "Washington, D.C."

Recently, a growing number of Americans are singing along as they move to the District in search of jobs, economic opportunity and cultural attractions.

In a study on migration provided exclusively to Reuters that is set to be released next month, United Van Lines found the District of Columbia tops all 50 states for the number of people moving in during 2012.

The city has held that spot for five years running, with 64 percent of the household moves in Washington coming from outside the city in 2012.

United Van Lines is the largest moving company in the country for households.Oregon ranked second, followed by Nevada, North Carolina and South Carolina. Washington is a city that does not belong to a state, but is subject to loose control from the federal government.

"Washington, D.C., is unique because over the last five years its unemployment rate was not hit as hard by the Great Recession," said Michael Stoll, chair and professor of public policy at the University of California at Los Angeles about the study. "But I think the other thing is that the city has remade itself from the one we knew 10 to 15 years ago."Washington has shed its reputation as the crime capital of the country, and it has developed a high technology corridor and other businesses that are both stable and hiring, said Stoll.

Also, many members of the Baby Boom generation are moving in as they retire, taking advantage of the free museums, monuments and cultural events the city has to offer, he said.

The rising popularity could yield a result also unthinkable less than two decades ago.

"D.C. will not just be a place of tourism. It will be a major economic engine, which many of us haven't thought of it as being before," Stoll said.

A U.S. Census report released on Thursday also showed the city is gaining new residents. Washington's population increased 2.15 percent between July 2011 and July 2012, a rise second only to North Dakota.

The District's population increase of 5.1 percent from 2010 to 2012 was the biggest in the country, the Census found. It had had 632,323 residents as of July 1.

The city has a large international community, largely due to the presence of foreign embassies and organizations such as the World Bank. The Census found people from other countries made up 32 percent of the net migration from 2011 to 2012.

According to a Labor Department report released on Friday, the District's unemployment rate fell in November to

8.1 percent from 10.1 percent the year before. Local political leaders point to a development boom and one of the highest median incomes in the country - $63,124 - as other draws to the city.

On a national level, Stoll said, the migration patterns show Americans are seeking economic opportunity in places where new manufacturing and technology enterprises are building up. The patterns reveal a swelling group of aging people who are retiring and looking for affordable and comfortable places to live, as well.

He added that many people who wanted to move to California, but were put off by the state's economic woes, turned their moving vans north to Oregon.

New Jersey topped states for outward moves, in 2012, the United Van Lines study showed, largely due to a shrinking factory sector. It was followed by Illinois, West Virginia, Michigan and New York.

Washington's popularity surge recently created a paradox in the city's economic success story. Last month, the Brookings Institution concluded three U.S. metropolitan areas are in economic recovery, but did not include Washington because its population burst drove down its gross domestic product on a per capita basis.

World Music Awards postponed due to visa issues, Newtown tragedy.

The World Music Awards was postponed on Thursday due to "logistical and multiple visa issue," organizers said, two days before the event was scheduled to be held in Miami.

Event producers John Martinotti and Marcol International said in a statement that the December 22 awards ceremony also was being delayed in the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, last week.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience but this decision had to be made due to logistical and multiple visa issues and  in view of this week's national mourning. Fans have been a great support to the artists and have voted online in huge numbers," the producers said in a statement.

The winners in categories ranging from world's best song, world's best artists and entertainer of the year, are picked by fans who vote online. The statement said that votes will continue to be collected until a new date is set for the show.

This year's nominees include Usher, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Chris Brown. Past winners include Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson.

The awards ceremony, founded in 1989 and hosted by Monaco's Prince Albert II, has primarily taken place in Monte Carlo and proceeds from the show go to charity. This year, show producers decided to move it to Marlins Park Stadium in Miami.

Some Nights - Fun.

New York City indie-pop trio Fun. hit the Studio 8H stage last night to make a joyful noise with the title track to their album Some Nights in an episode hosted by comedian Louis C.K. Dressed to weather another storm in a tan trenchcoat, lead singer Nate Ruess delivered high-energy vocals, belting out the a cappella opening before the rising chorus from his bandmates kicked in. For their second set, fun.

Climax - Usher #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs

“Climax” peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart in the Spring of 2012.

G.O.O.D. Music (Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz) – Mercy

The highly anticipated video for the G.O.O.D. Music crew’s track “Mercy” has been finally released. The video keeps it fairly simple on the visual end, in a sense, it matches the beat to the song.

20 Best Songs Of 2012

20 Best Songs Of 2012
A year of singles has come and gone, but when it came time for the Billboard.com staff to choose our 20 favorites we thought, fought and lobbied -- and most of all we listened. These 20 tunes cover the gamut from hip-hop and pop to country and rock, but we all agree they're 2012's best.

1."Climax"  - Usher

Teaming up with Diplo freed Usher's mind and falsetto, as "Climax" reminded the pop universe just how adept Mr. Raymond is at concocting slow jams. "Climax" is about a breakup, of course, but its immaculate production and tender vocal performance washed away any sadness from listeners.

2."Call Me Maybe"  - Carly Rae Jepsen

What, you've never heard of this one? Well, it's a charming pop ditty from Canada that imagines a world where people still use telephones and strings should be included in every Top 40 refrain. "Call Me Maybe" took over everything in the summer of 2012, and it deserved to.

3."Mercy"  - G.O.O.D. Music

The summer's biggest hip-hop beat is a bull in a china shop, smashing through Big Sean ass puns, seething Kanye rants and the Michael Jordan similes of Mr. 2 Chainz. This hip-hop summit still knocks. Mercy G.O.O.D. Music.

4."Some Nights" - fun.

A song that unfolds like "We Are Young" on steroids, "Some Nights" legitimized fun. as fearless, with absolutely absurd lyrics, no real chorus and an Auto-tuned breakdown. Somehow, it all works.

5."Adorn" - Miguel

"Fresh" is the word best used to describe "Adorn," a song that was originally released in Miguel's "Art Dealer Chic" series and elongated for maximum radio enjoyment. The sound is wildly original for R&B, but the romantic sentiments are strictly old-school.

6."Begin Again"  Taylor Swift

"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" was the Max Martin-helmed pop celebration, but the quiet moments of this follow-up single -- from the restrained chorus to the James Taylor shout-out -- allowed Swift to reach a heretofore unheard level of maturity.
"Begin Again"  Taylor Swift

7."Somebody That I Used To Know"  - Gotye feat. Kimbra

Sure, the words "Peter" and "Gabriel" will always be cynically tied to this unexpected No. 1, but Gotye and Kimbra synthesized forgotten styles and turned them into something fresh and unforgetta -- sorry, didn't mean to cut you off."Somebody That I Used To Know"

8."Thinkin Bout You"  - Frank Ocean

Mr. Ocean landed on this list last year with "Novacane," but the first song on "Channel Orange" switched up the tempo by featuring soaring falsetto in between white lies told to an object of his affection."Thinkin Bout You"  - Frank Ocean

9."Everything Is Embarrassing"   - Sky Ferreira

An out-of-nowhere sensation stuffed as the last song on an EP, "Everything Is Embarrassing" captures the sensitivity of flirtation through unabashedly warm hooks. Look out for Sky Ferreira.

10."What Makes You Beautiful"  - One Direction

The boy band resurgence of 2012 would not have been half as fun if its crown jewel, 1D's "What Makes You Beautiful," hadn't been so delectable. And yes, hair flips get us overwhelmed, too.

Glad you came - The Wanted

One Direction, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber are among the artists confirmed for this year's Jingle Ball, the annual star-studded, holiday-timed concert sponsored by New York's Top 40 music station, Z100 (WHTZ). This year's pop star summit will take place on Dec. 7 at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Ellie Goulding - Lights

British import Ellie Goulding stopped by the On Air with Ryan Seacrest studio to perform "Lights," "Anything Could Happen," and Rihanna's "Only Girl In The World."

Payphone - Maroon 5

As their single "One More Night" spends a fifth week in the top spot of the Hot 100, Maroon 5 has announced an expansive 2013 headlining tour of North America. Neon Trees and Owl City are set to join the group for the entire 31-date run.

The singer's follow-up to 'Call Me Maybe' and 'Good Time' enters the list at No. 40. Plus, Luke Bryan logs his fifth No. 1 on Country Airplay, where Carrie Underwood's new single debuts.

Taylor Swift keeps Bruno Mars out of Billboard 200 top spot

Country pop star Taylor Swift held her reign at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday, keeping retro-inspired R&B singer Bruno Mars' new album at bay.

Swift's latest album, "Red," released in October, held the No. 1 slot for a fifth non-consecutive week with sales of

208,000, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Mars' second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," sold 192,000 copies in its opening week to take the No. 2 slot.

The album's lead single, "Locked Out of Heaven," stayed at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a second

week, and is the singer's fourth chart-topping single. It also tops the Digital Songs chart this week.

Hip hop artist The Game entered the chart at No. 6 with his fifth studio album, "Jesus Piece," selling 86,000 copies.

Four festive albums sat in the top ten this week, with Michael Buble's "Christmas" at No. 3, Rod Stewart's "Merry

Christmas Baby" at No. 5, Blake Shelton's "Cheers, It's Christmas" at No. 8, and Lady Antebellum's "On This

Winter's Night" at No. 10.

Madonna leads Billboard's top-grossing tours

While this year's pop charts have been dominated by young singers, it is veteran music stars, led by Madonna, who are commanding big money in tour ticket sales, according to a new Billboard list released on Tuesday.

Madonna, 54, topped Billboard's list of highest-grossing live tours, earning an estimated $228.4 million in ticket

sales from her sold-out ninth worldwide tour in support of her 12th studio album "MDNA." The singer will wrap

her tour in South America this weekend, after performing more than 80 shows across the world starting in Israel in

May.

Madonna came ahead of pop star Lady Gaga, who landed at No. 6, with ticket sales of $124.9 million from her

worldwide "Born This Way Ball" tour. Gaga, 26, is currently midway through her tour, which kicked off in South

Korea in April, and will wrap in Oklahoma in March 2013.

Music publication Billboard compiled its list through estimated gross ticket sales figures from Billboard box scores,

which tracks concert tours, ticket prices and sales.

The top five highest-grossing tour acts of 2012 included Bruce Springsteen, 63, and the E Street band at No. 2 with

$199 million from 72 shows and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, 69, at No. 3 with $186 million.

Cirque Du Soleil's homage to late singer Michael Jackson in "The Immortal World Tour" ranked No. 4 with $147.3

million over 183 shows, and British rock band Coldplay was fifth with $147.2 million over 67 shows.

The only other young stars in the list of 25 top-grossing tours was Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, 18, at No. 20

with $30 million from 29 shows as part of his ongoing "Believe" tour, and country-pop darling Taylor Swift, 23,

who raked in $26 million from 21 shows from her "Speak Now World Tour."

Last year, Swift ranked No. 5 on Billboard's list with an estimated $97 million in ticket sales from her "Speak Now

World Tour," while Bieber came in at No. 15 with $44 million.

Swift will embark on her third worldwide concert tour in support of her studio album "Red" in March 2013.

Pop star Kelly Clarkson announces engagement

Kelly Clarkson, who became the first contestant to win "American Idol" a decade ago and went on to several chart-topping successes, has gotten engaged to her boyfriend, the singer said in a Twitter message on Saturday.

Clarkson, 30, previously revealed she had been dating talent manager Brandon Blackstock since early this year.

Blackstock is the stepson of country singer Reba McEntire.

"I'M ENGAGED!" Clarkson said on Twitter. "I wanted y'all to know!! Happiest night of my life last night!"

She then followed that by posting a link to a photo of her canary yellow diamond engagement ring on a website.

She wrote that her boyfriend helped design it and that she "can't wait to make Brandon's ring."

Clarkson's album "Stronger" hit No. 2 last year on the Billboard 200 sales chart, and she in previous years topped

pop charts with her songs "My Life Would Suck Without You" and "A Moment Like This."

The Texas-born singer won the Fox television singing contest "American Idol" in the show's debut year in 2002,

and has had more success than many of the show's stars from following years.

Clarkson has burnished an image as an artist willing to speak her mind, even confessing to feelings of loneliness.

Last month, in an appearance on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show," Clarkson said she had been dating Blackstock since

earlier this year and was thankful to have him.

"I am not alone for the first time for Thanksgiving and Christmas and I'm very happy," she said on the show.

In the same November appearance, Clarkson said she expected to get engaged to Blackstock. "We will totally,

probably elope," she told DeGeneres.

British singer Adele notched another accolade on Thursday as iTunes announced that her Grammy-winning album "21" was the top-selling record of 2012 in its U.S. store, extending the disc's successful run almost two years after it was released.

Adele, 24, who last year became the first artist to secure three iTunes milestones with top-selling album, single and

artist of the year, came in ahead of country-pop star Taylor Swift's "Red" and British folk band Mumford & Sons'

ITunes did not reveal its sales or download figures.

British boy band One Direction's debut album "Up All Night" and current Grammy nominees fun.'s debut "Some

Nights" rounded out the five top-selling albums on iTunes in the United States.

"21," released in February 2011, has performed strongly in the U.S. music charts this year following the singer's

Grammy-sweeping win in six categories in February 2012.

Adele also landed Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations for her sultry James Bond theme song

"Skyfall" this week, becoming a strong contender in the best song category for Hollywood's awards season.

"Thank you so much for the honor of being included in something as brilliant as the Golden Globes! Never in a

million years did I ever think I'd come close to such a thing! Truly wonderful ... thank you to the Bond family for

One Direction, Rihanna, Adele lead Billboard 2012 charts

Newcomer British boy band One Direction joined R&B diva Rihanna and British singer Adele to top Billboard's year-end music charts, released on Friday.

One Direction, who topped the Billboard 200 album chart twice this year with their debut, "Up All Night" in March

and their sophomore album "Take Me Home" in November, were named Billboard's top new artist/group, rounding

off a stellar year of U.S. success for the band.

Adele, 24, who became the first woman top score No. 1 single, album and artist on Billboard's 2011 year-end

charts, continued her reign in 2012, when her Grammy-winning record "21" was the top-selling album in the U.S.

and she was once again named artist of the year.

"21" has sold more than 10 million copies in the U.S. since its release in February 2011, becoming a fixture on the

Billboard 200, especially after Adele's six wins at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

She is the only act to be named both top artist and have the top album in Billboard's charts for two years in a row.

Adele was also named the No. 1 female artist while R&B rapper-singer Drake was named No. 1 male artist and

pop-rock band Maroon 5 were named No. 1 group.

Rihanna, also 24, was named the top Hot 100 artist after a year of chart-topping hit singles such as "We Found

Love" and "Diamonds" on the Hot 100 chart, which measures top-selling singles each week.

But Australia's Gotye picked up the Hot 100 single of the year, with his heartbreak hit "Somebody That I Used To

Know."

Billboard compile their end-of-year lists based on chart performances between December 3 2011 and November 24

2012, tallying data including album sales and streaming figures.

Rock legends take to New York stage for storm Sandy victims

Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones joined with actors and comedians in headlining a benefit concert on Wednesday for victims of Superstorm Sandy, which six weeks ago devastated scores of communities along the coastline of the U.S. northeast coastline.

The celebrity-packed "12-12-12" concert at New York's Madison Square Garden stretched on for nearly five hours,

and organizers said it was distributed to nearly 2 billion people worldwide through television feeds, radio and

online streaming.

"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins," Springsteen sang to the packed crowd. He was joined by fellow New

Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi for "Born to Run," ushering in a night of musical duets.

Next up, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters performed alongside Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, and later Paul McCartney

jammed with the surviving members of "Nirvana."

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Mick

Jagger told the crowd. The Stones, in the midst of a brief U.S. tour, performed "You Got Me Rocking" and "Jumpin'

Jack Flash."

Chris Martin of Coldplay jokingly suggested audience members should calculate the average age of the night's

performers and agree to donate that much. "And I think you'll raise billions," he said.

At the end of the concert, R&B singer Alicia Keys closed the show with "Empire State of Mind."

To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chelsea Clinton and Billy Crystal

took part in a telethon during the concert.

Comedian Adam Sandler took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the

title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"

Backstage, actress Susan Sarandon recounted losing power in her New York home but said that was a small

hardship compared with the real victims who lost their homes.

Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing

more to help.

"Even with the music business not what it used to be ... we are proud to be here," he said.

The concert was broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on

digital billboards in New York's Times Square, London and Paris.

EXPANDING FUNDRAISING'S REACH

More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the East Coast of the United States in October.

Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut,

causing billions of dollars in damage.

Throughout the show, celebrities shared memories of growing up in New York City or the Jersey Shore, and

offered shout-outs to first responders.

"Watching my hometown get pummeled was devastating to watch," said actor-comedian Crystal, who grew up on

Long Beach, Long Island. "It's a helpless feeling of what's in store for us maybe in the future."

As the show neared its finale, organizers said it had raised $30 million from corporate sponsors, ticket sales and

donations. The total raised from called-in pledges will take more time to calculate, said a spokesman for the Robin

Hood foundation, the concert's major beneficiary.

Donations raised from the concert produced by Clear Channel Entertainment and the Weinstein Co, will all go to

the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the

storm.

New Jersey is expected to take 40 percent of the total, while the rest will be divided up between New York City,

Long Island and Connecticut.

Donna Summer leads 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Late disco queen Donna Summer and hip hop pioneers Public Enemy headed a list of eight new inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation said on Tuesday.

Singer-songwriter Randy Newman, Canadian progressive rockers Rush, rock band Heart and the late blues guitarist

Albert King are also being inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame, which pays homage to people who have

influenced the music industry.

"We are thrilled to announce this year's class of inductees, which again represents the broad, compelling and

significant definition of rock and roll," Joel Peresman, president and chief executive of the organization, said in a

statement.

Non-performers Lou Adler, executive producer of the 1975 rock-musical cult hit "The Rocky Horror Picture Show,"

and pop arranger, composer and producer Quincy Jones are also named to the Hall of Fame.

They will be officially inducted at a ceremony in April in Los Angeles.

'Queen of Disco' Summer, who died in May at the age of 63, rose to fame in 1976 with the disco hit "Love to Love

You Baby." She had three number one hits in 1979 with "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls" and "No More Tears (Enough Is

Enough)," a duet with Barbara Streisand.

Although Public Enemy, formed by artists Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and DJ Lord, never topped the

charts during their three-decade career, the group is known for giving hip hop a political and social conscience in

the 1980s and early 1990s. They explored American race relations with songs such as "Fight the Power" and "911

Is a Joke."

Randy Newman, known for his sharp, ironic pop songs, has won two Oscar awards for songs he penned for

"Monsters, Inc." and "Toy Story 3," and six Grammys for his film work.

Heart scored hits with "Magic Man" in 1976, "These Dreams" in 1986 and "Alone" in 1987, while Rush is recognized

for complex rock songs that draw on blues.

King, who died in 1992 at age 69, was a towering figure in American blues guitar, with hits such as "Don't Throw

Your Love on Me So Strong" in 1961 and "Born Under a Bad Sign" in 1967.

The eight inductees were chosen from a shortlist of 15 nominees. Those missing the cut include German electronic

music ground-breakers Kraftwerk, rock group Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, rappers N.W.A. and rock band Deep

Purple.

The inductees were chosen by some 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which includes past

inductees, and for the first time this year fans were also allowed to vote.

Candidates for the Cleveland-based Hall of Fame must have released their debut album or single at least 25 years

before 2012 to be eligible.

Singer-songwriter Carole King to receive U.S. Gershwin prize

American singer-songwriter Carole King will be awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the U.S. national library said on Thursday.

The multiple Grammy Award winner co-wrote her first No. 1 hit at age 17 with then-husband Gerry Goffin and was

the first female solo artist to sell more than 10 million copies of a single album, with her 1971 release "Tapestry."

The prize honors individuals for lifetime achievement in popular music, the library said. It is named after

songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin.

King, now 70, topped the charts with the song "It's Too Late" in 1971, but is best known for her work performed

by others, including "You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by

Aretha Franklin.

"I was so pleased when the venerable Library of Congress began honoring writers of popular songs with the

Gershwin Prize," King said in a statement. "I'm proud to be the fifth such honoree and the first woman among such

distinguished company."

King and Goffin wrote some the biggest hits of the 1960s before their nine-year marriage ended in 1968. They rose

to prominence in 1960 writing "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" for the Shirelles.

The duo also scored hits with "Take Good Care of My Baby," performed by Bobby Vee in 1961, "The Loco-Motion,"

performed by Little Eva in 1962 and "Pleasant Valley Sunday," performed by The Monkees in 1967, among others.

New York-born King did not hit it big as a singer until 1971, when "Tapestry" topped the U.S. album charts for 15

weeks, then a record for a female solo artist.

Past recipients of the award include Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and songwriting tandem Burt

Bacharach and Hal David.

Legendary Indian sitarist, composer Ravi Shankar dead at 92

Sitarist and composer Ravi Shankar, who helped introduce the sitar to the Western world through his collaborations with The Beatles, died in Southern California on Tuesday, his family said. He was 92.

Shankar, a three-time Grammy winner with legendary appearances at the 1967 Monterey Festival and at

Woodstock, had been in fragile health for several years and last Thursday underwent surgery, his family said in a

statement.

"Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we

were able to have him as a part of our lives," the family said. "He will live forever in our hearts and in his music."

In India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office posted a Twitter message calling Shankar a "national treasure

and global ambassador of India's cultural heritage."

"An era has passed away with ... Ravi Shankar. The nation joins me to pay tributes to his unsurpassable genius, his

art and his humility," the Indian premier added.

Shankar had suffered from upper respiratory and heart issues over the past year and underwent heart-valve

replacement surgery last week at a hospital in San Diego, south of Los Angeles.

The surgery was successful but he was unable to recover.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to

withstand the strain of the surgery. We were at his side when he passed away," his wife Sukanya and daughter

Anoushka said.

Shankar lived in both India and the United States. He is also survived by his daughter, Grammy-winning singer

Norah Jones, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Shankar performed his last concert with his daughter Anoushka on November 4 in Long Beach, California, the

statement said. The night before he underwent surgery, he was nominated for a Grammy for his latest album "The

Living Room Sessions, Part 1."

'NORWEGIAN WOOD' TO 'WEST MEETS EAST'

His family said that memorial plans will be announced at a later date and requested that donations be made to the

Ravi Shankar Foundation.

Shankar is credited with popularizing Indian music through his work with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles

in the late 1960s, inspiring George Harrison to learn the sitar and the British band to record songs like "Norwegian

Wood" (1965) and "Within You, Without You" (1967).

His friendship with Harrison led him to appearances at the Monterey and Woodstock pop festivals in the late 1960s,

and the 1972 Concert for Bangladesh, becoming one of the first Indian musicians to become a household name in

the West.

His influence in classical music, including on composer Philip Glass, was just as large. His work with Menuhin on

their "West Meets East" albums in the 1960s and 1970s earned them a Grammy, and he wrote concertos for sitar

and orchestra for both the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.

Shankar served as a member of the upper chamber of the Parliament of India, from 1986 to 1992, after being

nominated by then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

A man of many talents, he also wrote the Oscar-nominated score for 1982 film "Gandhi," several books, and

mounted theatrical productions.

He also built an ashram-style home and music center in India where students could live and learn, and later the

Ravi Shankar Center in Delhi in 2001, which hosts an annual music festival.

Yet his first brush with the arts was through dance.

Born Robindra Shankar in 1920 in India's holiest city, Varanasi, he spent his first few years in relative poverty

before his eldest brother took the family to Paris.

For about eight years, Shankar danced in his brother's Indian classical and folk dance troupe, which toured the

world. But by the late 1930s he had turned his back on show business to learn the sitar and other classical Indian

instruments.

Shankar earned multiple honors in his long career, including an Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Britain's

Queen Elizabeth for services to music, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, and the French Legion

d'Honneur.
